The MOZA ESX Steering Wheel unlocks Xbox compatibility for supported MOZA direct drive wheelbases. As an officially Xbox-licensed steering wheel, the ESX lets you build an Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One racing setup around a compatible MOZA wheelbase rather than being restricted to a particular bundle. It features a compact 280mm rim, aluminium-alloy construction, grippy polyurethane handles and a quick-release connection. At £139, it is especially attractive when purchased alongside a MOZA wheelbase, although it is also available separately.
Officially Licensed for Xbox
The ESX's defining feature is its official Xbox licensing. Many MOZA direct drive wheelbases are primarily PC products, but pairing a supported base with the ESX enables use with compatible games on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One. The steering wheel provides the console authentication; attaching a different, non-Xbox-licensed MOZA wheel does not preserve this functionality.
This offers Xbox racers a wider choice of direct drive wheelbases and allows an existing compatible MOZA PC setup to be used on Xbox simply by fitting the ESX. PlayStation is not officially supported.
Recommended Wheelbase Pairings — R12 V2 and R16 Ultra
For an Xbox setup, UPSHIFT particularly recommends pairing the ESX with the MOZA R12 V2 12Nm Direct Drive Wheelbase or MOZA R16 Ultra 16Nm Direct Drive Wheelbase. Both provide a substantial step up in force feedback compared with entry-level racing wheels, while the licensed ESX enables Xbox use with supported titles.
UPSHIFT's maximum recommended pairing is the R16 Ultra. The ESX can connect to higher-output models such as the R21 Ultra and R25 Ultra, but we do not recommend those combinations due to the considerable torque available through a compact 280mm rim. The maximum is our practical purchasing recommendation, not an electronic compatibility limit or a guarantee of safety at full force.
Compatibility with Other MOZA Wheelbases
MOZA's compatibility chart lists the ESX for a broad range of its supported wheelbases, including the R3, R5, supported R9 generations, R12 V2 and R16 Ultra. It also lists higher-torque R21 and R25 models as compatible; as noted above, UPSHIFT does not recommend those above the R16 Ultra for this particular rim.
Important: Compatibility depends on the specific wheelbase generation, firmware and Xbox game. The ESX is not a universal console adapter for other wheelbase brands and does not make every discontinued MOZA model compatible. Please check your exact configuration before ordering a standalone wheel.
Compact 280mm Rim with Aluminium Construction
The 280mm-diameter wheel provides a compact driving position for GT-style and general racing. Its sturdy aluminium-alloy faceplate and rim give it a more substantial construction than many basic plastic console wheels, while ISF polyurethane grips resist sweat and provide a secure hold during long sessions.
The smaller diameter helps make quick corrections, but it also amplifies the force felt in your hands at a given wheelbase torque. This is why we particularly favour the ESX with moderately powered bases, and recommend adjusting force-feedback strength conservatively on the R12 V2 and R16 Ultra.
22 Button Inputs and Xbox-Style Controls
The ESX features 22 button inputs, including two joysticks, with familiar Xbox-labelled controls for console navigation and convenient access to in-game functions. Use the available buttons for shifting-related functions, pit controls, menus and other supported mappings.
Available button functions depend on the game and platform. Certain inputs that can be mapped on Windows PC are not independently assignable on Xbox because of console controller limitations, so the full physical input count should not be mistaken for 22 separately mappable Xbox functions.
Shift Paddles and RGB RPM Indicator
Aluminium-alloy gearshift paddles sit directly behind the wheel for easy upshifts and downshifts. A row of 10 high-brightness RGB LEDs across the upper centre provides a shift-light and RPM display in supported configurations. On PC, lighting settings and compatible telemetry functions can be adjusted through MOZA Pit House.
As with the controls, Xbox telemetry and RPM lighting depend on game support and will not necessarily offer the same functionality or customisation as PC.
Quick Release and Switching Between PC and Xbox
The MOZA quick-release system makes it simple to install the ESX on a supported base or exchange it for another MOZA wheel when using PC. MOZA instructs users to switch platforms by holding the S1 and S2 buttons simultaneously for approximately five seconds; the base restarts in the selected mode.
Connect the wheelbase to the console via USB, and connect supported pedals and other compatible peripherals through the wheelbase. Xbox support for shifters, handbrakes and additional accessories varies by game, so confirm the complete equipment combination rather than assuming every PC peripheral will work on Xbox.
Upgrade Your MOZA Xbox Racing Bundle
At UPSHIFT, we see the ESX primarily as an Xbox compatibility upgrade for a MOZA wheelbase or complete simulator package. The affordable steering wheel makes it easier to offer customers the MOZA direct drive experience on both PC and Xbox, particularly in combination with the R12 V2 or R16 Ultra.
This listing is for the standalone ESX steering wheel. A MOZA wheelbase, pedals, cockpit, console and game are sold separately. Check the manufacturer's latest supported wheelbase and game list for your proposed setup before purchasing.
